Rocketboom debuts on blip.tv
I’ll never forget the day, about two and a half years ago, when Jared Klett turned around and said “Have you guys seen Rocketboom?” There were four of us sitting in the Winter Garden of the World Financial Center. Jared, Justin, Charles and me. Dina would join a few days later.
We hadn’t seen Rocketboom, but Jared explained it to us. There was free WiFi at the Winter Garden (it rarely worked) and he used it to demo the show. We were entranced. We had been looking to start a company together, and had spent the last year and a half hacking away on software called Otter, which Justin had originally built years prior to power linkfilter.net. We were trying to sell it as a knowledge management platform. Once we saw Rocketboom we knew that we had to change direction. We were going to build a video platform.
The rest of the story goes like this: The five of us launched the first version of blip about a week later, on May 9. Charles joined the videoblogging group and introduced us to a community composed of thousands of wonderful people. We finally met Andrew Michael Baron of Rocketboom at a party in New Jersey about two months after we launched the first version of blip. Andrew and I spent a few hours on the roof drinking Coronas. At least, I was drinking Coronas. Andrew doesn’t drink, at least as far as I know.
We spent the next couple of years building blip, meeting great people, making new friends and hosting thousands of Web shows and playing frisbee.
And now, the buried lede — as of this morning, Rocketboom is officially on blip.tv. You can watch Rocketboom on blip, and videos on rocketboom.com are being served by blip.tv. Rocketboom’s RSS feed is being served by blip. And the ads you see on Rocketboom starting today are sold and served by blip.tv.
The Rocketboom team — Andrew and Mark Matthewson, Kenyatta Cheese, Joanne Colan, Ellie Rountree and the indefatigable Jamie Wilkinson — and the blip team — Justin, Jared, Charles, Dina, Mike, Allan, Angus, Eric and Susan — have been working towards this for the past month. I’m thrilled that we’ve now done it.
Over the course of the past month we’ve built the technology infrastructure needed to transfer Rocketboom’s hundreds upon hundreds of episodes to blip.tv, we’ve brought Comedy Central’s Sarah Silverman Program on as the sponsor of Rocketboom’s first weeks on blip.tv (thanks to the entire Deep Focus crew for making this happen) and we’ve developed pioneering new technology to deliver that sponsorship.
That new technology is an entirely interactive QuickTime overlay advertisement that looks and behaves just like a Flash overlay. We believe it’s the first of its kind. This QuickTime overlay can be clicked on, and it can also be closed. It works in iTunes and it works in Miro. It’s pretty fancy. It was developed by Jared Klett and Allan Grinshtein with a little help from the brilliant Dennis Backus of Apple’s QuickTime team and Josh Paul of Aweli. We never would have developed this technology without the insistent prodding of Andrew Baron, a man who cares so much for his audience and for the quality of his craft that he wouldn’t settle for just any QuickTime advertising implementation. He, rightfully, insisted on something groundbreaking — and we hope that we’ve delivered it.
I’d like to thank Ian Schafer, Deep Focus’ CEO, for having the vision and the confidence to believe in independently produced quality Web programming. Ian, Eric Druckenmiller, Evan Silverstein and Anna Howell, all of Deep Focus, have been wonderful. They are good, smart people who are actively paving the way towards a new and more relevant, more interactive and more meaningful type of advertising that works well with Web shows. They’re willing to take risks, willing to do new things and willing to innovative. They’re visionary, much like the people they sponsor.

And your QT overlay is brilliant - great use of the generally unused potential of QT to do this kind of stuff. Keep pioneering, exploring and pushing this stuff - easy & effective implementation of it will help speed us towards hypervideo - fully networked clickable video with interactive overlays: the future ;)

We have been noticing Blip for some timenow, congrats on waht looks like a critical mass / footprint leap in the making. very pleased to note Rocketboom ( way to go with the QT )
