Introduction Ogg Theora support

We’re really excited about the new Ogg Theora support, especially using the Cortado Java Applet player. We can’t take all the credit though, a scathing email from a reporter at The Inquirer gave us just the kick in the pants we needed.

That said, the Theora stuff still needs a lot of work, both on our end and on the codec itself. We had to try several different formats before we could find one that ffmpeg2theora would be happy with. Eventually we were able to get iMovie to play nice, so check out the result.

Great to see you’re support Ogg Theora!

Do you have s list of the problems you had? And the ways you solved them? (Such a list would be likely be helpful to other developers.)

Also, if you could list your complaints with Theora… the codec or any of the supported libraries, etc… it would be invaluable to the respective development teams.

Ogg Theora is the best solution , because it can be show in any OS.

For example VLC can play Ogg Theora and it runs in several OS : http://www.videolan.org

There is a program to help to convert any content to Ogg Theora : http://v2v.cc/~j/ffmpeg2theora

ffmpeg2theora is a program that make Ogg Theora content easy.

I suggest you use a newer version of cortado to get controls into the video and also to fix some of the issues. For example, have a look at http://metavid.org/ how Michael and Aphid deal with cortado for video search and playback.

thanks Silvia! we recently updated to version 0.2.1, but we’ll take a look at the link and see what we can do for our next release.

Thanks for supporting Ogg Theora! You’ve just become my favorite video blog!

One problem I have: when I follow the “check out the result” link, I get a grey window that obscures the links to the actual video and whatever else is behind it. I assume that window is supposed to display the Cortado applet, but I don’t have Java installed, so it just stays grey. Once I grab the link to the video (from the HTML source), it plays fine in my media player. Perhaps you guys could add some code that prevents the grey box from appearing if Java is not supported, or at least prevent it from obscuring other elements of the page?
